Mission Statement:

The Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum is dedicated to supporting the Sheldon Jackson Museum and its unique Alaska Native ethnographic collection through advocacy, acquisition and educational programming.

 Background:

The Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum is a nonprofit organization which incorporated in 1985. Funds to establish the organization came from donations and memberships, and from loans to support developing programs. The Juneau Friends also donated startup funding. Within a few years the FOSJM and shop were self-supporting.

How FOSJM Supports the Museum:

  • Sponsors the Native Artist Demonstrators Program and the Winter Lecture Series
  • Produces publications, educational kits, and videos, relating to the museum
  • Hosts receptions for exhibit openings and other events
  •
  • Purchases artifacts and artwork for the museum’s permanent collection
  •
  • Provides educational interpretation to the public by effective management of the Museum Store
  •
  • Recruits and manages volunteer support for museum functions and staff
  •

Benefits of FOSJM Board Members:
